Several years ago, a plaintiff attorney asked if I could find an anesthesiology expert to review a medical malpractice case which was well underway. When I know an attorney, I don’t mind just giving him a name and CV, if able. But I’m still hesitant to recommend a potential testifying expert without first reviewing the case myself.

Proper vetting of a testifying expert is very time-consuming and many attorneys prefer to do that task themselves. But, for me to even preliminarily contact a potential expert, I need to know the facts of the case so I can intelligently go over the specifics with the expert, prior to making a referral.

Although I had a great anesthesiologist in mind the more questions I asked of the attorney, the more puzzled I became. The attorney finally got tired of my endless questions and sent me the medical records.

Basic facts of the case: A gentleman coded while in the special procedures room and had to be taken directly to surgery. He never regained consciousness and tubes were pulled a few days later.

Several very well-qualified physician experts in various specialties had already reviewed the file. I read several of the expert depositions. The defense repeatedly stated there were no code blue records, due to the code happening in the special treatment room. (RED FLAG) (more…)

May I suggest that if you want to own a pet that you go to a pet store that actually sells pets?

Forget going to seminars where people gather who want to own pets. Forget getting an ad in the paper saying that you want to own this kind of pet. Go to where the pets are.

Do you want to work with an attorney? Get involved in the places where the attorneys are. Find a PI and Medmal attorney seminar, and study and research the subject matter.

Actually attend the lectures, and be ready to ask questions and offer suggestions if you feel comfortable. Asking intellingent questions is a great way to market. Questions stimulate other questions, and can result in lively discussions.

Most of the time questions and comments will be encouraged. But if not, hang around afterward, seek out open faces, and ask questions, offer your take.

It is scary and exciting, and there is the possiblity of rejection, but so what? There is also the opportunity for sweet success!!

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. They do not know you, or have power over you. This will be an adventure. Studies show that senior citizens regret not having taken more risks. Don’t be a statistic.

Do you want to work with an attorney? Get to the attorney store, and have fun while you are there!

Respectfully,
Lisa K

“What did I DO without you?”

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Well, if that isn’t THE finest thing to hear from a new client! I swear, it makes every single frustrating, difficult moment of that uphill battle being a new consultant company just melt away! I’ve now heard this comment THREE times! Its been unreal each time! Like winning a medal! I wanted to put my hands up and yell “sweeeeet”! There really is no way to describe the adrenaline rush that came each time I heard those words! I just barely supressed that Cheshire Cat grin! I wanted to get up and shake their hands–or actually hug them–because I was so happy!! Happy for THEM! Happy that they finally realized how convenient and HELPFUL it is to work with a legal nurse consultant (LNC)!

Not being someone who takes compliments very well, I expressed my appreciation by thanking my clients for the opportunity to work with them. And I DO mean that! I truly love working with my attorney clients in my capacity as a nurse. Each case I work on always results in an interesting facet that requires new research, or an opinion that can be argued, or a fact that no one else uncovered, or a point of view that no one has seen before. And to hear those words…”What did I do without you?” just validates why I do what I do. :) (more…)
